There are dozens of bakeries and pastry shops in Quebec City, but which are the best? Here are my favourites; there will undoubtedly be one that will satisfy your craving for a classic dessert or viennoiserie.

Borderon et Fils

Let me start this list of the best Quebec City bakeries with Borderon et Fils. They specialize in creating the best loaves of bread, whether white, whole wheat, baguette, or ciabatta. They take pride in choosing the best ingredients possible, especially flours from sustainable agriculture. Of course, they also make other delicacies like viennoiseries and pastries.

Addresses: 1101 3e avenue and 208 rue Saint-Vallier O, Quebec City

Le Croquembouche

When you enter Le Croquembouche, you quickly notice that it is more high-end than the traditional bakery. Indeed, you will find all the French pastry classics (croissants, éclairs, macaron), as well as various cakes and their miniature versions. If you are in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood, I strongly suggest you stop by!

La Boîte à Pain

If you are instead looking for a viennoiserie or simply a tasty bread loaf in Quebec City, my recommendation is La Boîte à Pain. This place is more of a traditional bakery that bakes fresh bread every morning. They have many sandwiches, muffins, and other delicious viennoiseries.

Addresses: 432 rue du Parvis, 2636 chemin Sainte-Foy, and 250 boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel Quebec City (at the Grand Marché)

PS: Pain in French means bread, and it is nothing about affliction! 🙂

Paillard

I love grabbing macarons from Paillard when visiting Quebec City’s historic district. It is no coincidence that many tourist guides have recommended this French bakery over the years. If you are wandering Old Quebec City and looking for a place to grab lunch, Paillard has everything you need, from sandwiches to more refined delicacies.

Addresses: 4141 boulevard de l’Auvergne, 811 route Jean-Gauvin, and 1097 rue Saint-Jean, Quebec City

Pascal Le Boulanger

This bakery is not exactly located in Quebec City, but it is a must if you are in Stoneham, a few kilometres north. Pascal Le Boulanger’s story starts with a French baker who wanted to make fresh goods and establish himself in this mountain area. If you are planning to go skiing or drive to the Saguenay region, you must stop at this lovely bakery on the way.

Address: 4 avenue Tewkesbury, Stoneham

Pâtisserie Denis Tannous

Another great bakery in Quebec City is Pâtisserie Denis Tannous. Located in Sainte-Foy, it offers a wide variety of classic cakes and desserts (eclairs, millefeuilles, tiramisu), but its specialty is baklava. This bakery has been open for nearly 40 years and is undoubtedly worth considering if you are in the area and have a sweet tooth.

Pâtisserie Chouquette

Do you know what a chouquette is? It is a French dessert made up of choux pastry. As its name suggests, Pâtisserie Chouquette’s specialty is this pastry, but they offer much more. Indeed, they also provide vegan cakes and other types of elegant desserts. I swear that their products are as good as they look!

Address: 778 rue Saint-Jean, Quebec City

La Folle Tablée

La Folle Tablée is one of my favourite places in Quebec City. Its menu is extravagant and colourful, and its products are as good-looking as they are tasty. The restaurant also offers a great variety of desserts and pastries, including doughnuts, cheesecakes, cupcakes, brownies, and macarons, as well as vegan options. It’s the place to visit if you want something out of the ordinary.

Address: 8085 boulevard Henri-Bourassa, Quebec City

Beiko

Another original bakery in Quebec City is Beiko. It specializes in making fresh doughnuts every day, not boring ones. Among its most popular flavours are the Ferrero-Rocher, the key lime pie, the pecan pie, and cookies and cream. It even has a Simpson-inspired doughnut and many vegan options.

Addresses: 2778 chemin Sainte-Foy, 720 rue d’Everelle, and 9310, boulevard de l’Ormière, Quebec City

Les Macarons de Sophie

If you are like me and love macarons, I suggest visiting Les Macarons de Sophie. Sophie is from Belgium and arrived in Quebec City in 2010. Since then, she offers the best macarons in town. She takes pride in using Belgian chocolate and natural colourings in her creations.

Address: 15,059 boulevard Henri-Bourassa, Quebec City

Café La Maison Smith

You might already know La Maison Smith for its coffee and hot beverages since it’s a popular coffee shop chain in Quebec City, but they also offer a wide variety of viennoiseries and desserts: cinnamon rolls, croissants, macarons, cheesecakes… Whichever way you take your coffee, they have the perfect pastry to go with it. Since they’re located in most Quebec City districts, a La Maison Smith coffee shop is nearby!

Addresses: there are currently 11 Café Smith in the Quebec City area

Where Can I Eat the Best Macaron in Quebec City?

It is a challenging question, but I believe that Les Macarons de Sophie and Paillard have the best macarons in Quebec City. They offer plenty of flavour choices and are made according to traditional European recipes.

Who Makes the Best Croissant in Quebec City?

Another tricky question! Since all bakeries in Quebec City offer great croissants, it’s difficult to decide. Nonetheless, Borderon et Fils, Le Croquembouche, and Paillard seem to have the croissants people like the most in town.

In conclusion, there are many great bakeries in Quebec City. Whether you are looking for a fresh baguette, macaron, or doughnut, this town is full of cooks who work hard to offer you what is best. It is no surprise that many tourists enjoy the city’s gourmet heritage. If you need any suggestions for a delicious meal, feel free to look at my Quebec City Italian restaurant list.

Need a place to sleep? I find most of my accommodations on Booking.com but I also use Hotels.com for their rewards program (11th free night) as well as Expedia. When booking smaller places in Quebec, you might not find them here and need to contact them directly.
