From bustling cities to quiet countryside towns, there is no shortage of things to see and do here. And the best part? You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy it all. Let’s uncover Quebec on a budget.
Contrary to popular belief, travelling to Quebec on a budget is possible and can also be a truly rewarding experience. There are many, many ways to explore this province without draining your bank account.
When most people think of travelling to Canada, their minds often jump to the vibrant and busy city of Montreal. While it definitely has its charms, there is so much more to Quebec than just its largest city.
Explore everything from quaint villages in the Eastern Townships to the stunning natural landscapes of the Laurentian mountains. This province is a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
With a bit of careful planning and insider knowledge, you can visit Quebec on a budget and explore all that this province has to offer without spending an arm and a leg. Whether you are a solo traveller, a group of friends, or a family, there is something for everyone in Quebec; here’s how to do it without blowing your budget.
Plan Your Trip During the Off-Season
The peak tourist season in Quebec is from June to August for summer travel and December to March for winter travel. To save money, consider visiting during the shoulder season (April-May and September-October).
Travelling during the off-season also means more availability. Travellers will have a broader range of accommodations, transportation, and activity options. With less competition for popular attractions, there is also more chance of snagging last-minute deals or discounted tickets.
For example, during the off-season, Mont-Tremblant, just outside of Montreal, transforms into a peaceful and charming mountain town. Accommodations are discounted, and you can enjoy the stunning scenery at places like the Fairmont without the busy crowds.
Île d’Orléans is a small island just outside of Quebec City and is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into traditional Quebecois culture. During the off-season, you can take a tour through the quaint villages, sample local produce, and take in the beautiful scenery without the summer crowds. Even if a lot of places are closed, there are still many to discover if you plan correctly.
Use Public Transportation
Quebec as a province doesn’t really have an extensive public transportation network, I have to admit, although it does have some. Cities like Montreal, however, do, including buses and metro in the metropolis, and buses in Quebec City.
They’ll take you to most tourist destinations. Purchasing a daily, weekly, or monthly pass can save you money on transportation costs compared to taxis, Ubers, or rental cars. Taxis in Quebec can be expensive, with the cost of a short trip within the city often exceeding $15. In comparison, a single bus or metro ride in Montreal or Quebec City usually costs around $3.50.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and Société de transport de Québec (STQ) are 2 of the major public transit authorities that serve the cities of Montreal and Quebec City, respectively.
To travel between cities in Quebec without a car, it’s easier to catch a train instead of a plane. For less than $100, you get a return ticket and can enjoy some beautiful Quebec countryside in the process.
Utilize Parks and Surrounding Nature
Quebec has many beautiful parks and hiking trails where you can enjoy a picnic or snack. Bring reusable water bottles and buy food from local grocers to avoid expensive restaurants.
In Quebec City, check out the historic Plains of Abraham. This park has a great view of the city and is the site of the famous battle when French troops lost to the British.
In Montreal, be sure to visit Parc du Mont Royal. Perched on the side of the mountain, there’s tons of space to explore and even more space to set up a picnic and enjoy the afternoon.
For the more adventurous, head out to Abitibi-Témiscamingue for a slice of true Quebec nature.

Take Advantage of Discounted Walking Tours and Local Groups
Many cities in Quebec offer walking tours led by local guides at low prices, sometimes even free (with tip, of course). These tours are a great way to explore each town, learn about its history and culture, and get insider tips on budget-friendly activities and places to eat.
Navigating Quebec City yourself could be intimidating and time-consuming. Join a tour to see all the historic sites as well as the new cool spots (I wrote a review all about it!). Montreal is even bigger and therefore offers more tour options. You can customize which areas you want to explore and spend the whole day out and about for less than $20.
